Hokies Enjoy 2nd Annual Football Recruit Hi-Light Luncheon-Sponsored by Bill Leong-State Farm Insurance

Approximately 54 very interested Hokies packed Bailey’s Sports Grille in Newport News on February 8th for VT football recruiting coordinator, Coach Jim Cavanaugh’s review of our newly signed football scholarship athletes.  Coach ‘Cav’ talked about each signee, their recruitment history, attributes, shortcomings, academic potential, football potential, etc.  As usual, Coach ‘Cav’s’ commentary alone was worth the price of admission.  He also showed each player’s high school hi-light film.  Based on this review, I believe most Hokies came away feeling very good about the quality of our football program over the next few years.  It appears that what was considered a good recruiting effort was moved to the very good level by a few last-minute signees from Florida and Pennsylvania.

It is always interesting to see what these young men, who are offered scholarships based on their potential, actually do with the opportunity they are provided, over the next 4-6 years.  Thanks to everyone who assisted in making this a successful event, especially our sponsor, Mr. Bill Leong. See photos from the luncheon posted below.

Peninsula Hokie Club Annual Gift and Awards Night

The Peninsula Hokie Club held its monthly Hokie Rep meeting on Oct. 25 at Frank Beamer’s American Grill in Hampton, Va.  At the meeting the club presented its annual gift to VTAF in the amount of $9700 to Ms. Terry Bolt, Director of Development for the Athletic Fund.  This gift is the result of numerous fundraising activities throughout the past year; i.e. golf tourneys, dinners, auctions, concessions, etc.  This gift also completes the $35,000 pledge the club made four years ago for the Hahn-Hurst Basketball Practice Center. In addition, the club accepted a more formidable challenge by signing up for a $50,000 pledge over the next five years toward the new football locker room.  To successfully meet this challenge will require the best efforts of all our Hokie Reps and club members as they have provided in the past. Football Season Ticket Auction Complete

The Peninsula Hokie Club again had a successful auction of two pairs of season tickets for exciting Hokie football.  An avid Hokie in Roanoke and a very lucky Hokie in Galax will be able to take in the color and excitement of Hokie football, each with a pair of tickets to all home games this year. These are really great seats on the west side 50 yard line.  This is the 2nd year in a row the Roanoke Hokie has made the winning bid for these tickets.  I think these seats are getting comfortable for the Roanoke Hokie. The auction will also help the club meet its fund-raising goal again this year.  Thanks to all who assisted in the auction.

Beer Concession Activity Over For The Summer

The Peninsula Hokie Club provided the labor for the beer concessions at the Hampton Summer Fest on Saturday evening, July 31.  This was the club’s last beer concession opportunity for the summer.  We worked two events this summer for TIPS and a small percent of sales (profits).  The events went well with good weather both evenings and a good turnout of hard working Hokies and friends.  In addition to selling mucho product and working hard for TIPS, we got to socialize with some good Hokies and also sample the product a little as well. Many thanks to John and Bonita Wells for coordinating these activities and for everyone who participated.

Peninsula Hokies Enjoy Annual Orange & Maroon Dinner and Golf Outing

Peninsula Hokies gathered for the annual Orange & Maroon Tour dinner on May 3 at the Point Plaza Hotel in Newport News. Approximately 95 Hokies enjoyed a social hour, a delicious dinner, and very interesting presentations by Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach James (JJ) Johnson and Football Offensive Line Coach Curt Newsome.  We were also honored to have Coach Newsome’s mother attend our dinner.

The annual Peninsula Hokie Club/Bay Electric Golf Tourney was held on May 11 at Williamsburg National Golf Club.  A large group of 105 ‘hacking’ Hokies enjoyed a great day for golf.  The weather was nice and cool and no one got wet. The overall champions for the event was the Sonny Brockman team;  but everyone participating came away a winner since everyone won a prize. The real winner, of course, will be the VTAF, who will benefit from our fund-raising effort.  Thanks to all who supported the event.
