It’s A Wrap On The Peninsula Hokie Club’s 2011 Orange & Maroon Dinner

Approximately 88 Hokies turned out for the annual O & M dinner on May 3rd at the Point Plaza Hotel in Newport News.  They listened with interest to remarks from Athletic Director, Jim Weaver and newly appointed VT Women’s Basketball Coach, Dennis Wollf.  Coach Wollf told the audience that even though he had never coached a women’s team, the experience he gained going through the recruiting process with his daughter, who was the #1 recruit in America a few years ago, would be a great help in his new job.  Also coaching men for 15 plus years gave him more than enough experience for the job.  Continue reading

Two Passes to Greenbrier Invitational Golf Classic For Sale

A benefactor has donated to the Peninsula Hokie Club for use as a fund-raising tool, two sets of passes to the Greenbrier Invitational Golf Classic, the PGA Golf Tourney that takes place the week of July 25 to 31 at White Sulpher Springs, WV. Each set includes passes for one person to each day of the golf tournament (July 25 to 31) and  to the VT Alumni Hospitality tent (for complimentary food and drink) for each day of the event.  Each set also comes with two concert tickets, one ticket for each of the two concerts to be held during the golf tournament week -  Tim McGraw and Luke Bryan on Thursday, July 28th and Miranda Lambert and Keith Urban on Saturday, July 30th.   Each set of passes with the two concert tickets is valued at $495.00, or $990.00 for both sets.  The Peninsula Hokie Club will offer both sets of passes together for $250.00.  This is a great value if you can be in the White Sulphur Springs area that week, a fantastic vacation spot.  This will be the 2nd annual Greenbrier Golf Classic.  Last year’s event was very successful, attended by many Hokies, and Hokie Brendan DeJong finished in the top five.

Hokies Enjoy 2nd Annual Football Recruit Hi-Light Luncheon-Sponsored by Bill Leong-State Farm Insurance

Approximately 54 very interested Hokies packed Bailey’s Sports Grille in Newport News on February 8th for VT football recruiting coordinator, Coach Jim Cavanaugh’s review of our newly signed football scholarship athletes.  Coach ‘Cav’ talked about each signee, their recruitment history, attributes, shortcomings, academic potential, football potential, etc.  As usual, Coach ‘Cav’s’ commentary alone was worth the price of admission.  He also showed each player’s high school hi-light film.  Based on this review, I believe most Hokies came away feeling very good about the quality of our football program over the next few years.  It appears that what was considered a good recruiting effort was moved to the very good level by a few last-minute signees from Florida and Pennsylvania.

It is always interesting to see what these young men, who are offered scholarships based on their potential, actually do with the opportunity they are provided, over the next 4-6 years.  Thanks to everyone who assisted in making this a successful event, especially our sponsor, Mr. Bill Leong. See photos from the luncheon posted below.
