2012 Football Recruit Luncheon

The Peninsula Hokie Club is again hosting a luncheon to present high lights of the new VT recruits for 2012. The event is sponsored by Mr. Bill Leong – State Farm Insurance and will be presented by Coach Jim Cavanaugh. This is an opportunity for club members and Hokie fans to get an idea of the quality of players we will be seeing in the future. Coach Jim Cavanaugh will present video highlights of each of the new recruits. In addition, he will answer questions about the Virginia Tech football program.

Coach Cavanaugh is the Director of Recruiting & High School Relations for the Virginia Tech football team. He spent 15 seasons as the strong safety and outside linebacker coach. A former high school coach in Newport News, he is very familiar with this area. He began coaching in 1970 and joined the Virginia Tech staff in 1996. He has coached at VMI, NC State, Marshall, Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina. He primarily focuses his recruiting efforts in the Richmond and Peninsula areas.

Lunch reservations are requested by Wednesday, February 1, 2012 and are limited to the first 75 people. Cost is $15 per person which includes one of the four food selections listed below and a soft drink (cost is $15.75 if paying on-line).

Peninsula Hokie Club Presents Annual Gift to VTAF

The PHC held it’s monthly meeting at Beamer’s American Grill in Hampton, Va on Nov. 2.. The purpose of the meeting was to present our annual gift to VTAF. This year’s gift was a check for $9,500 toward the club’s pledge in support of the new football practice facility. Again this year, the club gift is a culmination of many fund-raising activities conducted throughout the year with the help of our Hokie Reps, our business sponsors, and other Hokie Club members. We thank everyone who participated in these activities and hope we can count on you again next year.

September 3rd-Last Summer Beer Gig-NEED VOLUNTEERS!

The Peninsula Hokie Club will be working the beer concessions at the Saturday evening Hampton Festival on September 3^rd at 6 pm. This is the last beer gig the club will work this year. Of course, the Hokie football team is playing Appalachian State the same day in Blacksburg. Therefore, some of our regular workers will be at the game which means we will need some new volunteers. Come on out and have some fun selling suds, sampling the product and listening to some good music. The money we earn will go to support our fund-raising goal for the VT Athletic Fund. Two SEASON TICKETS near the 50-yard line on the West Side of Lane Stadium are being auctioned on eBay by the Peninsula Hokie Club. We are requiring payment through PayPal. Tickets will be shipped to successful bidder in mid-August when the Peninsula Hokie Club receives them from Virginia Tech.

The Black Eyed Peas concert has been added to the event calendar at the Greenbrier Golf Classic on Friday night, July 29. So now, The Peninsula Hokie Club is offering tickets for two people to an entire week of golf, VT hospitality tent all week, Tim McGraw / Luke Bryan concert, Melissa Lambert / Keith Urban concert, and the Black Eyed Pea concert for only $250 (a $1,000 plus value).

Also,if you would like to attend the events; but need four tickets, the Peninsula Hokie Club can add tickets for two more people to the package for a total of $450.

16th Annual Peninsula Hokie Club/Bay Electric Open Golf Outing Completed

Eighty golfers participated in our 16th annual Hokie Club golf event at the Williamsburg National Golf Club. All 80 participants received a prize, in addition to a great day weather-wise and a nice picnic-style lunch with a keg sponsored by W.M.Jordan Co. It doesn’t get much better than that.

The champion of the captain’s choice golf event with a score of 58 was the team of James Craft, Bob Mowers, Tom Mihalik, Jim Wood. First Flight winners with a 59 were Brian Grieff, Bill Mckay, Ken Moyer, Larry Harden. Second Flight winners with a 59 were Frank Seamster, Carolyn Seamster, Chris Seamster, and Nick Re. Third Flight winners with a 62 were Jason Hartmann, Paul Hartmann, Joe Fudge Jr, and Joe Fudge III. Of course, the real winner will be VTAF, the beneficiary of our golf fund-raiser. Thanks to all who participated and the sponsors of both the dinner and golf events.

It’s A Wrap On The Peninsula Hokie Club’s 2011 Orange & Maroon Dinner

Approximately 88 Hokies turned out for the annual O & M dinner on May 3rd at the Point Plaza Hotel in Newport News. They listened with interest to remarks from Athletic Director, Jim Weaver and newly appointed VT Women’s Basketball Coach, Dennis Wollf. Coach Wollf told the audience that even though he had never coached a women’s team, the experience he gained going through the recruiting process with his daughter, who was the #1 recruit in America a few years ago, would be a great help in his new job. Also coaching men for 15 plus years gave him more than enough experience for the job.

Athletic Director Weaver talked about the overall improvement in VT’s athletic program, in general. He also reviewed the plan for the seat reassignments in Lane Stadium next year, which got everyone’s attention.

In summary, it was a delightful evening with delicious food, interesting speakers, and great Hokie companionship.
